Home Furnace Replacement

Furnace replacement in Adamsville, TN, vented and sized the right way

When a furnace reaches the end of its life, the replacement should fix more than the age problem. It should heat evenly, vent safely and match the ductwork it will be pushing air through.

  • Heating load calculation
  • Venting and combustion air reviewed
  • Temperature rise measured at startup

Replacing a furnace without repeating old mistakes

Furnaces tend to be oversized. For decades, installers added capacity as a safety margin, then added more when the replacement came around. An oversized furnace heats the air near the thermostat quickly, shuts off, and cycles again a few minutes later. Rooms far from the thermostat never catch up, the blower starts and stops constantly, and components wear faster. A heating load calculation based on your actual home usually shows that a smaller, better controlled furnace will be more comfortable.

Efficiency is the next decision. Standard efficiency furnaces vent hot exhaust up a chimney or metal flue. High efficiency condensing furnaces extract so much heat that the exhaust cools and produces water, so they vent through plastic pipe, usually out a side wall or roof, and need a condensate drain. Moving from one type to the other changes the venting plan, and that change can affect other appliances too.

A bigger furnace is rarely a better furnace. Right-sized equipment runs longer, quieter cycles and heats rooms more evenly.

One example we check carefully: when a standard furnace that shared a chimney with a gas water heater is replaced with a condensing model, the water heater is left venting alone into a chimney that may now be too large for it. That can lead to poor draft and condensation inside the chimney. Correcting it, often with a properly sized liner, is part of a safe replacement, not an optional extra.

Blower and staging choices affect comfort as much as efficiency does. Single stage furnaces run at full output every time. Two stage and modulating furnaces run at lower output most of the time, which means longer, quieter cycles and more even temperatures. Many modern furnaces use variable speed blower motors that adjust airflow to the demand, which can improve comfort and pair well with air conditioning or a heat pump.

The ductwork has to cooperate. Every furnace has a rated temperature rise range printed on its nameplate. If the ducts restrict airflow, the air leaving the furnace gets too hot, safety limits trip and the heat exchanger is stressed. We measure static pressure before recommending equipment and verify temperature rise at startup. Where the ducts need rework, the details are covered under Ductwork Install And Replace.

Safety is the reason many replacements happen in the first place. A cracked heat exchanger can allow combustion gases to mix with household air, and a furnace with that condition should not be operated. When a technician recommends replacement for that reason, we show you what was found. A working carbon monoxide alarm on every level of the home is essential regardless of what heating system you have.

Installation includes removing the old unit, connecting gas and electrical service, installing venting and condensate drainage to code, and commissioning with measured gas pressure, temperature rise and combustion checks. We handle permits where required, register the equipment with the manufacturer and back our labor with a written warranty.

Signs a furnace is ready to be replaced

Any one of these deserves a closer look. Several together usually point toward replacement.

Cracked heat exchanger

A compromised heat exchanger is a safety issue, and the furnace should not be run.

Frequent ignition or control failures

Repeated repairs on an older furnace add up quickly and rarely end.

Rooms that never feel warm

Uneven heat often reflects sizing, staging or airflow problems a replacement can address.

Yellow or unstable burner flames

Combustion problems need prompt evaluation for safety and efficiency.

Rising gas bills

Efficiency declines with age, and older furnaces are often far less efficient than current models.

Furnace well past mid-life

Age combined with any of the signs above is a strong reason to plan ahead.

Our furnace replacement process

The steps below are designed to deliver a safe, correctly sized and fully commissioned system.

  1. Safety and condition review

We inspect the existing furnace, venting, gas piping and any shared chimney arrangement.

  2. Heating load and duct evaluation

A room by room load calculation is paired with static pressure readings on the ductwork.

  3. Written proposal

Options compare efficiency, staging and blower type, with venting and any chimney work spelled out.

  4. Removal and installation

The old furnace is removed, the new unit set, and gas, electrical, venting and drainage connected to code.

  5. Commissioning and walkthrough

Gas pressure, temperature rise and combustion are checked, then controls and filter care are explained.

Variables in a furnace replacement project

The final scope depends on your home and the choices you make. These factors carry the most weight.

Main cost drivers for furnace replacement
Efficiency levelCondensing furnaces cost more upfront and require different venting and drainage.
Staging and blower typeTwo stage, modulating and variable speed options improve comfort at a higher price.
Venting changesNew side wall or roof venting, and chimney lining for remaining appliances, affect scope.
Ductwork correctionsRestrictions that push temperature rise out of range may need to be fixed.
Pairing with coolingReplacing the furnace and air conditioner together can simplify matching and installation.

Warmer homes after a furnace replacement

The load calculation showed our old furnace was far too big. The new two stage unit runs quietly and the back bedrooms are finally comfortable.

They noticed our water heater would be left alone in the chimney and included a liner in the proposal. I would never have known to ask about that.

Furnace replacement questions

How do I know what size furnace I need?

We perform a room by room heating load calculation. Square footage alone is not enough, since insulation, windows, air leakage and ceiling height all affect how much heat your home needs.

Should I choose a high efficiency furnace?

Condensing furnaces use less gas for the same heat, but they require plastic venting and a condensate drain. We compare installation requirements and operating cost so you can decide.

What is a cracked heat exchanger?

The heat exchanger separates combustion gases from the air circulated through your home. A crack can allow those gases to escape into the airstream, which is why a furnace with this condition should be shut down.

Can I replace my furnace and keep my air conditioner?

Often yes, if the air conditioner is in good condition and compatible with the new furnace blower and coil. If the air conditioner is older, replacing both together may be more practical.

How long does a furnace replacement take?

Most replacements are completed in a day. Projects with new venting routes, chimney work or duct changes may take longer.
